Sculpture Medium – Air-Dry Clay
Air-dry clay does not require kiln firing, is light weight, and allows a more versatile design as any material e.g., wood, plastic, metal, paper, etc. can be incorporated and an internal wire armature allows the sculpture to be easily posed in any configuration and wired to various objects or hung. It can also be reworked once dry.
I sold four air dry clay sculptures at the last Sculptural Objects Functional Art and Design (SOFA) show in Chicago.

Instructor’s Background
As a medical device inventor and entrepreneur (inventing the tools that physicians use, www.MedicalDevice.com), Julia S. Rasor explores materials and often uses found artifacts in her sculpture that will both, convey topics she is passionate about and preserve time, resulting in a unique, expressive body of work (www.FineArtSculpt.com).
Julia merged her art and science careers – it not uncommon to see her fearlessly experiment with a wide range of media and subjects resulting in sculptures that emanate both dark and light emotion – Yin and the Yang. Her background is published in
Her sculpture series include world events (The Recession and Modernism), the afterlife (Spirits), high fashion (Haute Couture, Avante-Garde), nudes, dancers, warriors, guardians, and strange departures into the unusual (FractAliens, a fractured alien).

The Neighborhood
Fallbrook is almost always sunny, and much of the time cool mornings and nights from the marine layer. It was founded in 1869, is known for its avocado groves and claims the title “Avocado Capital of the World.” It is often called or known as “The Friendly Village” so explore our small town’s agriculture and culture, shop in locally owned farmer’s markets, clothing boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, and enjoy our fine eateries, have a coffee or a high tea (complete with china, tablecloths, and a hat!). Hike nearby at the Santa Margarita river wilderness with 14 miles of trails (7 minutes) or climb Rock Mountain (14 minutes)!
Rock Mountain
Go wine tasting in town or nearby Temecula (30 minutes), or to the beach in Oceanside (35 minutes). There are great routes from the property through the neighborhood to walk, run, or bicycle.
Fallbrook Art Community
Fallbrook has a vibrant and active arts community with many galleries and exhibits to tour. It is organized under Fallbrook Arts Inc.:

Out on a Limb, Julia S. Rasor, wax on found driftwood
Acquiring the skill to sculpt in wax rather than clay can cut the time and cost to create a bronze sculpture by one third to one half because only one, rather than two molds is required. Students will make a 6 to 8 inch figure from sculpture wax that will be sent to the foundry to cast a one-of-a-kind bronze sculpture.
The base of the sculpture will be made from the artist’s found object(s) resulting in a piece that is very personal and specific to the artist – it preserves a history important to them.
Constructing the sculpture in the form of a posed figure captures the artist’s emotion and thoughts and projects them into the piece. All experience levels are welcome. Instruction is tailored to individual goals.

Not your usual art exhibition of beautiful, lighthearted people, pets, flowers, and landscapes. Curator Ruth Jameson was touched by two artists’ expressions of the darker subjects of war, misery, despair, and depression.
Mohammed Al Hamadani – Painter
Jameson says of painter Al Hamadani: “Mohammed just walked into the Gallery last month with some of his work. I was stunned at the depth and the visceral impact of his work. He has made his history a memorable story of what he and his family and fellow Iraqis went through on the night of Shock and Awe which they call the ‘Night of Fire’. This war I believe will go down in our Nation’s history as one of the worst blunders of Foreign adventures ever to ensue. In spite of the fact that we killed over 200,000 thousand Iraqis, they still have hope that we can hope for a better future for both of our Nations.”
Jameson says of sculptor Rasor: “Julia’s works characterize the Human struggle. Whether it exemplifies the economy, international affairs or just our daily lives of trying to live our destinies, the works speak in a very emotional way of our humanness in a world of sorrows and joys.”

The 2016 Edition of The Greater Fallbrook Area Sourcebook published by The Village News came out this month with a feature article about Julia S. Rasor. Editorial writer Sandra Shrader was alerted by a friend of Julia’s that there was a new resident of Fallbrook she might find interesting to interview for the latest Sourcebook.
Julia S. Rasor, Greater Fallbrook Area Sourcebook 2016, Feature Article
Medical Device Inventor and Entrepreneur
Greater Fallbrook Area Sourcebook 2016 Julia S. Rasor feature
The feature article covers Rasor’s over thirty year career in the medical device industry where she invents the tools that physicians use – she has numerous patents issued and pending – and is the founder of a number of medical device companies one presently trading on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange. Rasor is the inventor of the first ultrasonic contrast agent as well as the application of a medical gas from a nasal dispenser to treat migraine headaches. She has worked for over 60 medical device companies and is still inventing for others in a worldwide think tank and as an advisor assisting other entrepreneurs with starting medical device companies, see www.MedicalDevice.com.
Artist Sculptor
Julia always loved art, only a few years ago she stumbled upon her ability to sculpt. She is versatile in a wide range of media – steel, mesh, ceramics, concrete, plaster, bronze, wax, mixed media – and often incorporates found wood and rusty steel artifacts thus preserving history in her sculpture. Her works have been described as dynamic, edgy and dramatic.
Sculptures in the San Diego Botanic Garden, Sculptor Julia S. Rasor, Fallbrook, CA
Julia says of her artistic process: “In creating my art, I allow my feeling at the time, and the particular medium, lead my exploration into forms that inspire, provide a feeling or message, or just cause curious wonderment. Most of my life has been spent exploring technical ways to aid the human body; my art allows me to explore and express human emotion”. Her art education has been from numerous professional and public artists in the form of classes, workshops and artistic critiques and advice.
Julia’s focus is on sculpting the human figure. Her interest in this subject arose through her years of study of the human body. She has created a large body of work of figurative sculptures in both representational and abstract styles. Her more recent works are abstract series of transforming spirits of natural materials, mesh forms of industrial materials, and mixed media creations she has named FractAliens.

Her works have been exhibited at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, CA; Oceanside Museum of Art, Herbert B. Turner Gallery, Del Mar, CA; San Diego Sculptors Guild, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA and Tubac, AZ; The Studio Door gallery North Park San Diego; Encinitas City Hall and Library; Brandon Gallery, Fallbrook Art Center, and Fallbrook Public Library in Fallbrook, CA. New exhibitions are planned at the Sparks Gallery, San Diego, CA and the Phantom Gallery, Oceanside, CA. Julia holds Open Studio, Workshop, and Artist Retreat events at her San Diego Artist Retreat located at her Fallbrook Avocado Ranch studio/gallery.
Founder of San Diego Artist Retreat
Rasor continues to found new start-ups. Her most recent is the San Diego Artist Retreat where she has created an art immersion experience. The retreat takes place in Julia’s spectacular rural mountaintop avocado ranch setting.

I have been asked to have my next workshop be teaching found object sculpture. It will take place at my San Diego Artist Retreat studio in Fallbrook. Students will incorporate their own found object artifacts into a one-of-a-kind figurative sculpture. Once the workshop is full, additional students will be placed on the cancellation list and list for next class that will be held on Fridays or Saturdays.
This method of sculpture is one I particularly like – when I repaired and remodeled my ranch I kept pieces of weathered steel mesh and rusty worn hardware and incorporated them into a figurative sculpture I mounted on an avocado root from my grove thus creating the sculpture “At the Apex” that preserves the history of my homestead.
At the Apex, Julia S. Rasor
Making sculpture in this way is very personal and specific to the artist – it preserves a history important to them in a piece of art – a heritage and memories that can be passed down to family members. Constructing the sculpture in the form of a figure captures the artist’s emotion associated with the gathered objects and projects it into the piece.
All experience levels are welcome. Instruction is tailored to individual goals.
